The Silent Hunger

FantasyComplete30 chapters

Forty months after the world went quiet, the rule of the coast is simple: be quieter than the next sound. The things that came with the Hush, the coast calls them Listeners, do not hunt by sight or scent. They hunt by hearing, and grief is the loudest food there is. In Barrow Point the survivors live on felt soles and greased hinges and hands instead of voices, and Cole Vann, a scavenger who has not trusted his own mouth in three years, has kept his family alive the only way that works anymore: silence, discipline, and no noise worth dying for. His daughter Ada, twelve years old and deaf, has never once been afraid of the dark. She has never heard what lives in it.

Then a stranger walks into town carrying a field radio, cranks it, and dies for the noise. On the band, in a child's voice pitched exactly for one ear and one grief, something says Da. It knows the bedtime questions Cole once asked his daughter Mira about the moon. It knows the stuffed shark with the ruined eye. It knows how tired she used to get at the end of a long day, a tiredness Cole never told anyone, because he could not have borne to say it aloud. Mira has been dead for four years. He buried her himself on the third night of the fever, in the silence he had taught her to keep.

The voice comes from the Needle, a broadcast tower eleven miles inland, across a prairie of broken glass that shifts in the wind and rings at a footstep. With Ada signing and Tomas, a sound engineer who has not spoken above a whisper since the concert that cost him his family, Cole goes up the ridge to dig his daughter's grave open again and bring back the truth.

What he finds is worse than a monster. A church has grown around the tower, ringing bells to herd the frightened uphill like stock, and its Warden has fed the thing below a hundred and nine living listeners, one by one, believing the promise that the taken dead will be given back. Beneath the Needle something vast and patient lies coiled in the dark, wearing the voices of the loved dead like a coat. It does not want Cole's life. It wants his wanting: a father in a warm room, listening to a loop that is always one sentence from finished, starving politely, making no sound worth hunting.

To break it, Cole must do the one thing forty months of silence taught him never to do. He must open his ruined throat and become the loudest thing on the coast, and let the fire he and Ada build take its price out of his ears.

The Silent Hunger is a story about grief used as bait, about a deaf girl who walks through the world's oldest trap untouched, and about the difference between the voice that wears the dead and the dead themselves. You do not fill that hole with more voices. You put a match in it, you hold it, and you come home.
