The Moonlight Pawnshop

FantasyComplete42 chapters

Tobin Rudd was the best ledger-keeper the Coinmark Guild ever trained, until he read the red column and discovered that his guildmaster had been selling members' skills to pay a debt nobody could ever finish paying. He reported it. The guild deregistered him the same night, and the only thing the blacklist let him keep was an old pawnshop deed and a brass punch from the counting-room he would never see again.

The shop opens at midnight and closes at three, server time, and it comes with rules older than the guild. Tobin can appraise anything: not its price, but its true value and every hidden clause inside it. He can freeze anything pawned, so that the item cannot be deleted, destroyed, or transferred until it is redeemed. And he can test-pawn: pay a rental fee, use a pawned item's ability once, and give it back whole.

The cost is real. Every overdue, unredeemed pledge is drawn against his own body, one seventh at a time, until a leg, an eye, or a memory goes. He can only trade with players who carry an outstanding debt. And the shop's ledger always keeps its own account.

Then the impossible ticket arrives. It was written years ago by his brother Emrys, who deregistered rather than let the guild's debt fall on Tobin, and whose collateral is his whole account: character, inventory, record, memory, estate. A ticket from a player who no longer exists should not be able to enter a shop at all. Yet it is on the counter, in his brother's hand, and the ledger wants it paid.

On the same nights, items across Vantris begin to disappear. Not deleted. Recovered. Skills walk out of players who still remember owning them. A courier forgets her own street but hums a tune she cannot place. Someone is quietly buying up every forfeited skill, every luck point, every unpaid memory in the game, routing them intact into a single account, and stacking them inside one player whose class does not exist on any registry.

Tobin has one weapon, and it is not a sword. "Pawned means frozen. Overdue means transferred." If he can hold what the collectors have gathered, if he can name every debt in the ledger aloud, he can turn the oldest pawnbroker rules in Vantris into a cage around the man who has been quietly becoming a compound of everyone else's abilities.

He buys low and sells high. He charges the rich for the privilege of being handled carefully. He lets a poor man with nothing but a stub corner a god-geared player at the counter, because the rules do not care how much coin a person has. And he keeps one eye on the shop's own ledger, where his body is the last surety and every night the column gets shorter.

The Moonlight Pawnshop is a game-system LitRPG about contracts, fine print, and the exact price of a promise. The dungeon is a ledger. The boss is a clause. The loot is your own name, and it has to be redeemed line by line.
