When Samsara Online opens its servers, it is not just another game. It is the first virtual world whose currency is backed by the World Central Bank, where gold earned in-game can become a fortune in reality, and whose mysterious creator, a woman named Eva, promises true magic instead of menus and skill bars. The world rushes in to claim a second life.

Xie Feng does not rush. A university student in Shanghai, he shares a quiet villa with Xie Yao, the childhood friend whose parents died in a car accident two years ago - an accident he knows was nothing of the kind. To everyone else he is an unremarkable young man. In every virtual world before this one, he has been a ghost of the shadows: an assassin by instinct, patient, ruthless, and utterly at home in the dark.

He enters Samsara Online, chooses the assassin class once again, and takes the player name Shiva. Then the system makes an announcement no player has ever heard: one of the three forbidden objects of this world, the sealed Ring of the God of Destruction, has chosen him as its master - and it cannot be refused.

The continent of Adastreia is vast. Five great cities, from the northern gates of Eminentis to the Imperial City of Grandeux. A tower called the Heaven of Samsara that no one has fully climbed. Seven legendary pearls scattered among powers mortal and divine. NPCs so lifelike they flinch at the mere mention of death. And in a beginner's village, a potion-selling old man hands out missions that no one else can see.

Xie Feng meant to keep his head down, level quietly, and grow strong enough to protect the only family he has left. Instead, on his first day, the forbidden ring binds itself to his finger. Not long after, a creature no database can identify - a palm-sized dragon girl who seems to come from another world - imprints on him, and he names her Ling Long.

Spear in hand, he tears through quests that should be impossible. Guilds that mocked him learn to fear his name. Tycoons and great families, inside the game and outside it, begin to take notice, because the border between the two worlds has started to blur: Espers walk the streets of the real one, old gods gather faith through their worshippers, and beyond the edge of every map, the things sealed away in the name of the goddess Mei Hen wait for someone foolish enough to come closer.

Xie Feng has no interest in saving the world. He wants the pearls, the levels, and the strength - enough strength that no one can ever again take from him the people he loves. But every seal he breaks on the ring feeds something ancient that even the gods tried to bury, and a forgotten god of destruction has been patient for a very long time.
