Blood Moon Ascension

WerewolfComplete30 chapters

Kian Mercer walked into the blood moon rite as House Mercer's spare heir and walked out branded false. The hall stone refused his blood in front of the whole gallery, his father bent the brass name plate in half, and the roll was struck through in fire before the moon had set. By morning he was livestock with a ticket number, sold downriver to the Red Pit Arena with a two-minute death window and a crowd that had paid to watch him die on schedule.

The pit was supposed to finish him. It did the opposite.

Stripped of the court shape every Mercer is trained to wear, Kian finds a heavier inheritance waiting under his skin: a winter-dense shift older than the house that disowned him, built for winter kills and not for banquets. He refuses the kill when the crowd pays for a corpse, and the Lower Quarter starts chanting the name the hall burned off a brass plate. Selene Ortiz, the medic paid to keep him breathing until the gate, waters his sedation and hides the chart that would sentence him to a quieter death. Voss the Pitmaster, who sells anything, starts selling him.

Then Kian finds the carved moon under the arena, and the floor answers his blood. It refused his brother's. Cut into the stone beneath the sanctum is an inscription, the moon keeps the buried line, the moon refuses the painted heir, and below it waits a gallery of ten thousand broken crescents with names older than the city's charter. House Mercer was never the oldest thing in the city. It was built on top of the real thing.

Everyone with a vault wants the buried line owned. His father orders six silver closing collars from the only smith family that still cuts the pattern, collars that close only on a wearer who consents. The trade courts serve writs. The Master of Weights of the River Assay, the office that weighs every coin on the water, has been burning the upriver valleys where the line scattered, herding the survivors toward the one registry with a keeper who answers the door and buying their debts for pennies on the coin. When the blood moon rises full, he serves a lien on the pit itself, with a company of collared wolves behind him and the floor of the city as the merchandise.

Kian has no throne, no army, and no interest in ruling. What he has is a floor that answers only blood that wants nothing, a smith who would rather burn his trade than fit the collars, a lawyer who switched sides after drafting the execution clause, six hired wolves who decided to be wardens, and a valley girl named Ada Vey with the broken crescent on her wrist and three hundred years of missing names to reclaim.

The painted houses bleed the moon for blessings. The buried line keeps it. And the blood moon over the river was never a curse. It is a key, and someone has finally turned it.
