Dungeon Core Reborn
by PageCrave Editorial
Kade Fenwick spent nine years as a geotechnical engineer listening to tunnels, and the one time he heard one decide to kill, it killed him first. He woke as the thing he had spent his career digging into: a dungeon core the size of a fist, cracked from rim to base, sitting in a wet grey cavern with a system interface written into his mind and a status line that read HUNGER: ACTIVE.
The rules of his new existence arrive in a flat, patient font. Grow. Spawn. Kill the delvers who come through your gate, eat their essence, expand, repeat. Every core in the world runs on the same text. What the text never explains is why a dead engineer would refuse the only career on offer and reach for arithmetic instead. Kade runs his cavern like the project it should have been: goblins on wages instead of chains, traps that cost delvers their pride instead of their lives, a tithe paid freely by four villages that could stop at any time, and don't, because the mountain called Cairn's is the first landlord in living memory to hand back more than it takes.
Then the customers change. A cartel sends factors with contracts where the thieves used to come with crowbars. A crusade marches under a prelate who names him a devil and brings a chained war-core to make the theology stick. In the drowned hold to the north, the Hollow King — nine years hungry, nine years patient — watches a fellow core invent a way of living that threatens the whole economy of fear. And at the bottom of Kade's deepest gallery stands a door that is not stone, with a crack in it that widens a little every time he dares to care about somebody.
Because the system text was never a game. It is a maintenance ledger. The nine cores of the world are hasps in a ring of locks, the mountain is a mechanism, and the thing the ring was built to shut in has spent nine centuries learning patience of its own. The price of closing that seal for good is printed in the same flat font as everything else: a hasp standing in the frame, willing. No core has ever volunteered, and the ring has waited nine hundred years for one. To hold the door, Kade would have to surrender every tier he has ground for, every wall and warm room he has grown, and stand in the frame on purpose, forever, with four hundred people sleeping in his walls.
Dungeon Core Reborn is a complete LitRPG novel about base-building, economics, and a monster who reads his own terms and conditions. Expect dungeon management from the inside, progression that costs, an economy where the hardest resource is trust, a cast of miners, monks, factors, and goblins with a self-appointed union, one very stubborn archer named Vessa Hale, and a door that is learning to say please.
