The E-Rank Broker

FantasyComplete30 chapters

Leo Park is the weakest rank in Seoul, and his ability will never make him stronger. No fire, no flight, no healing light. Point it at a gate, a party, or a plan, and it prints one cold, exact number: the percent chance you walk back out alive. Three years of E-rank work has taught Leo what everyone in the industry knows. A percentage cannot swing a sword, and nobody hires a broker who cannot fight.

Then a violet gate cracks open over Hongdae on a Sunday morning, and Leo walks in anyway, because he can read the dungeon the way no S-rank can: honestly.

The numbers are the crime. Director Kim, an old registrar with a conscience, hands Leo the Association's internal gate schedule, and the pattern is ugly. Low-rank gates rated far below their real danger. Three breaks the ratings said were impossible. Fourteen civilians dead while the guilds stood outside collecting salvage rights. Every inflated rating traces back to one guild: Iron Sovereign, and its master, Kang, who freezes Leo's credentials the moment Leo says no to him. An illegal registrar override card keeps Leo in the gates. A folding table, a whiteboard, and a coffee maker that survived a war become the Broker's Den: gate assessment, party assembly, risk management, no guild affiliation required. His first hires are the hunters the system chewed up. Minho, a healer blacklisted by every guild in Seoul. Soojin, a sword who went to business school. Yuna, a D-rank scout who sells gate intelligence out of a sticker-covered laptop.

Together they run the Red Gate of Yongsan at forty-one percent, and what they find clamped to its core, a machine built to destabilize gates for profit, drags a guild master in front of a tribunal. The plea agreement makes Leo famous. The encrypted messages that follow make him afraid. They arrive signed A FRIEND, and they are always right: the emitter technology is already for sale in London, New York, and São Paulo, insured by a syndicate that profits when gates break, built from CHORUS, a project designed to do the opposite, to sing a cracking gate back to sleep. Its author, Adrian Voss, has been dead for six years, except he has not. He has been watching Leo, testing him, and waiting with half of a resonance lock that can disarm every stolen weapon, on one condition: when the work is done, Leo delivers him to the tribunal, because a woman named Ha Mirae died at Ulsan so that warnings like these could exist.

Leo cannot out-fight an S-rank, a government, or a ghost. He has never needed to. He deals in the one currency every guild is short of: numbers nobody paid him to inflate.

In a city where gates are rated by whoever pays for the rating, the most dangerous man in Seoul is an E-rank who can prove what the odds really are. The guilds call him a joke. The desperate call him first. And in a basement full of old servers, the Den is always open.
