The Gatekeeper

FantasyComplete30 chapters

The gate behind the bodega was supposed to be a routine D-rank clear: go in, kill the goblins, collect the core, go home. Marcus Webb has done thirty-seven of them. It pays the rent on a Bushwick apartment, keeps his hunter license active, and keeps his best friend Sam from nagging him about getting a real job.

Then this gate refuses to close.

It climbs from violet to red. A monster the size of a car tears its way out. And while his party screams, Marcus hears the impossible: the rift itself, afraid. He puts his hand on it, feels the lattice of mana like threads under his fingers, and pulls it back together — something no hunter in recorded history has ever done.

The Association calls the ability Threshold. He is the only person alive who has it.

Elena Vasquez, the Gate Division handler who recruits him, is not the only one interested. Director Ren is. Brilliant, charming, a true believer, Ren wants Threshold for his black-budget weapons program, Project Latchkey — a device that can open gates on command, in the middle of a city, and he has spent years failing to build one. Then Marcus walked in.

And Marcus is not alone in his own head. Something lives in the weave behind the gates. A voice, faint and patient, older than the war — and it is screaming. Because the probes buried in the living doors are not measuring them. They are torturing them.

Because the gates are not wounds. They are doors, and on the other side of them stands Luminara, the last great city of the Weaveborn — the people humanity has been killing for twenty years without ever once seeing them.

To stop Ren, Marcus will have to show the world the truth. That means an expedition into the gate-spawn city, a rescue that leaves his closest ally in a mana cage, a broadcast that brands him a terrorist on every screen on Earth, and a march on Manhattan into a final battle in Times Square, where Ren opens a weaponized gate of his own. What rises from that fight is not the victory anyone planned: a golden door above the plaza, the first permanent bridge between two worlds — and a D-rank from Bushwick named Gatekeeper, the one man both worlds have to trust.

But doors open in both directions.

A black gate blooms over Luminara, eating light. Beyond it waits something older than the weave, older than the war, older than the First. Then the Architect itself walks through the white door, and Marcus learns what the doors were always for — and what it costs to hold ten thousand of them open while every grief of every crossing pours through his chest.

To survive, he will have to weave himself into the lattice that remembers everything, cross to the worlds beyond it, and answer the question every faction in two worlds keeps asking: is the Gatekeeper the wall that keeps the worlds apart, or the hand that holds the door open?

The Gatekeeper is a complete thirty-chapter portal fantasy about a working-class hunter, a dying civilization, and the stubborn decision to open instead of close.
