The Ashen Inquisitor

FantasyComplete30 chapters

Caspian Rook has spent his life lighting pyres for the Church of the Sacred Flame. Heretics, witches, demoniacs: he investigates them, tries them, burns them, and tells himself it is holy work. The ash has long since worked into his faith, cracking it, but duty holds him together, and duty is what sends him to Ashenmere, a remote river city where demons keep slipping into the faithful and the Inquisition keeps burning them out.

His predecessor on the case is dead. An apparent suicide, wrists opened, the word LIAR written on the wall in his own blood.

Then, in a crypt beneath the cathedral, a possessed woman opens her eyes, black as a starless sky, and speaks in the voice of Caspian's dead mentor. The message is simple and damnable: there are no wandering demons in Holy Veyra. The Church summons them. Priests perform the rites, the possessed are burned as heretics, fear fills the pews and the coffers, and the cycle has run for five hundred years. Every summoning is recorded in a forbidden archive beneath the cathedral, and every page bears a signature.

The signature of Archbishop Valerius. The holy man Caspian has served all his life.

What follows is a descent into the machinery of the lie. A murdered Inquisitor's hidden key. A door sealed for generations. Shelf after shelf of signed confessions, and beneath it all a summoning chamber chalked with old circles and littered with small bones. The proof Caspian carries out of that darkness will cost him his rank, his name, and his safety, and it will bind him to three unlikely allies: Darrow, his partner, a big red-faced true believer whose certainty shatters one revelation at a time; Lyra, a young archivist who has spent years secretly copying the records ever since the Church burned her sister; and Mara Voss, the healer Caspian once condemned, a witch who did not burn, who escaped into the Undercity beneath the streets and rose to rule the outcasts gathered there.

Because Valerius moves fast. The fugitives are declared heretics, demon-possessed madmen, their faces on every notice from the capital to the coast. Roads close. Gates close. The hunt closes in, and the only place left to run is down, into the tunnels of the people Caspian once hunted. When the Inquisition finally breaches the Undercity with steel and fire, the condemned do not scatter. They stand and fight, behind a man they have every reason to hate, for a truth they have already paid for in blood.

The Ashen Inquisitor is a grim dark fantasy of corrupted faith and costly atonement: witch-burnings, demonic possession, an inquisition turned predator, and one broken man who decides that if the truth cannot save him, it can at least outlive him. Caspian Rook burned the innocent for a lie. Now he carries the proof of that lie in a satchel on his back, along roads full of people who would gladly burn him for it, and he does not put it down.
