The Villainous Goddess

FantasyComplete30 chapters

Natalie De Velle built the land the gods walk on, built them an afterlife, and then ruled all of it alone for ten thousand years. She was the highest-ranking goddess who had ever existed, and she was dying of boredom. So she started a hobby: finding pitiful mortal souls and reincarnating them into better lives.

Then she found Daphne Zeus, a duke's daughter so worn down by her own family that she stepped off a balcony. Natalie gave the girl's soul a warmer world to be born into, and then, because a perfectly good body was going to waste, folded herself into it instead.

Waking up in the cruel Zeus household, the goddess does what any sensible deity would do. She terrifies the abusive maid, outcooks the chefs, sews her own wardrobe, and starts collecting debts. Her new life also comes with complications no amount of divine power prepares her for: a womanizing prince who will not take a hint, a rival house that serves poisoned tea parties, and a royal ball where one calm refusal ends with her dismantling six knights in front of two kingdoms.

Then there is Linda, the cotton candy boy with the green eyes who keeps turning up wherever trouble finds her. He teases like a commoner, fights like a soldier, and knows things about her that no stranger should. What Daphne cannot remember is that five thousand years ago she had a best friend named Ezekiel, who died in the forbidden monster realm telling her to run, and that she once begged a spell to forget his face. Linda has been carrying that name, and that promise, across a very long time.

To dodge an arranged marriage, Daphne blurts out that she has a lover. Her father calls the bluff and ships her off to the kingdom of Vernon with Linda playing the part. The arrangement is supposed to be simple: hold hands, smile for the duke, go home. Nobody plans for the one bed at the inn, the jealousy, or the way pretending starts to feel like remembering.

But the dark realm her friend died in has not finished with her. Gods are vanishing. A beacon that burned for six thousand years is torn from its tower, turned face down, and made to pour its light into a wound in the world, and the message carved beside it says: YOU SHOULD HAVE STOPPED ME. The one god she once spared now wants an audience for her fall, and he is willing to eat through the wall between realms to get it.

So the pretended lover and the forgotten friend turn out to be the same man, the fake courtship turns real, and the girl the Zeus family called worthless turns out to be the ruler of all three realms. To keep her wall standing, Natalie will muster gods and mercenaries, trade mercy for judgment, and answer one very personal war, with the man she was made to forget holding the line beside her.

A cozy-epic fantasy of second chances: a heroine's slow-burn payback, a fake courtship that refuses to stay fake, and a love that outlasts death itself. The heat burns high, and every bedroom door closes gently on the best part.
