The Dragonblood Princess Awakens

FantasyComplete32 chapters

For nineteen years they told Princess Seraphina what she was. Scaleless. Bloodless. The place where the oldest dragon line in the realm quietly died. Nineteen years of physicians pressing two fingers to her wrist, nineteen years of being knelt over by people who wanted her gone, and at last the council found her one practical use: a bride of alliance, cargo with a title, sealed into Vharemine white and shipped south across the water with a fleet of seven ships.

The assassins came aboard on the first night.

The crossbow bolt went through her heart, and instead of dying, Seraphina heard something no physician had ever heard: a long note, deeper than the sea, a dragon's note sounded on an instrument she had been told all her life she did not own. Fire poured out of the wound. Wings of burning bone unfolded against the sail of her own wedding ship, and the world learned, in one night of white flame, that the bloodless princess was not empty at all. She was a seal. Her dying mother, an exiled princess of the Elder Flight, had poured an ancient dragon's whole power into her newborn daughter's heart and gone into the fire to keep it.

And seals can be opened. For a price.

Five seals hold the Hoard-Heart shut, and five keys wake them: blood, already paid on a burning deck; the Tide Altar under a green sea; the Ash Altar under a burning convent; the Storm Altar in the lightning country; and the last door, sleeping where no one has thought to look for it. Every opened seal gives her a dragon's power. Every opened seal drops her body one degree colder, and takes its toll from her memory in small, irreplaceable coins: the color of her first dress, the sound of her old nurse's voice, the name of the woman who baked her honey bread. The book that maps the road warns her what the last door costs. A heart that forgets every name.

Hunting her altars is a boy and a ring: Reinhardt Ashvale, the sworn sword assigned to guard her, secretly the last of the Twelve of the Vigil, the old guard her mother's enemies thought they had exterminated. He runs furnace-hot; she grows one degree colder at every door; and the warmth between them becomes the one currency the toll cannot devalue, from a shared breath in the deep blue of the Tide Altar to a courtship gift that binds his heartbeat to hers. By the law of his order, his blood is the second key to her last door. By the law of her blood, he is the one name she intends to keep.

Behind her, her uncle the Regent is spending a kingdom to get the Hoard-Heart for himself: seal-thieves at sea, a price of ten thousand crowns for her heart, and nine children of the great houses locked in his tower as surety of her surrender. Ahead of her: the altars, the truth of the Night of Cinders, the Elder Flight coming down to claim what woke.

She can stay the girl the realm buried. She can become the dragon it deserves.

Or she can open the last door and fight for both.
