The Summoned Accountant

FantasyComplete30 chapters

Arthur Vance spent his life finding the one number that does not add up. Then he died at his desk, mid-audit, and woke up kneeling in a summoning circle with a message already burning through his skull: The system is universal. Every world has a ledger. Every ledger can be corrupted. Every corruption can be audited.

The kingdom of Valdris paid a fortune in mana to summon a Sage-class hero, a sword-swinging champion to save them. What climbed out of the circle was a forensic accountant.

Valdris runs its magic on double-entry bookkeeping. Every person is born bound to a personal mana account. Every spell is a transaction, debited here and credited there, and the whole kingdom balances on Primus, the master account at the heart of it all. It should have been the perfect system. Instead, Lord Chancellor Valerius has been cooking the kingdom's books for thirty years, siphoning more than half the royal reserves through a shell account called Account Zero. When the reserves run dry, the wards fail, the healers lose their power, and the kingdom falls.

The court wanted a hero. It gets an auditor. Arthur cannot swing a sword, but he can read a fraud the way other men read the weather, and he starts small, with a minor lord whose phantom soldiers have been drawing pay for years. One audit becomes twelve. Twelve cases become a Tribunal. The Tribunal becomes an army of veterans paid in mana bonds, a slum girl who can feel mana moving through the walls, a disgraced archivist carrying her grandfather's forbidden manuscript, and a siege that ends with Arthur face to face with the living ledger itself, a vast, wounded book that has been forced to record its own corruption for three decades.

Then comes the offer no accountant could refuse: bind himself to the system as its living safeguard, become the Audit, and never go home.

Book One follows Arthur from his first balance-sheet ambush to the floor of the Great Ledger Hall, where a king signs warrants, a chancellor is charged with treason inside his own tower, and the deadliest weapon in the kingdom turns out to be a sealed ledger entry. Every victory is won the accountant's way: follow the trail, freeze the accounts, make the numbers testify. And every victory costs, because a man who can audit anything must eventually audit himself, including the one entry in his own past, a variance he signed off at three in the morning and never confessed.

Witty, procedural, and relentlessly plotted, this is portal fantasy turned inside out. There are no duels decided by swordplay here, only compound interest, shell companies, quiet ledgers, and a hero whose ultimate skill is refusing to sign anything he has not read. The books are open. The lamps burn honest. The Chancellor's fraud runs thirty years deep, and Arthur Vance has until the reserves run dry to balance the ledger of a world, or die trying a second time.
