The Hero Returns

FantasyComplete257 chapters

Kim Sung-in died alone at the end of the world. The last hero of a fallen humanity, he had spent three years holding the line against Fafnir, a mountain-sized giant with a dragon's head, while the survivors behind him counted down his fatigue and fed him to monster hordes one battle at a time. The final horde was a decoy. The people he saved had decided the Hero was more useful dead. So the strongest man alive fell among the corpses of monsters, hearing a dragon's voice admire him even as it closed its jaws.

Then he opens his eyes in a hospital bed, decades in the past, in a body that is not quite his own.

He is Kim Su-hyeun now, an unknown, second-rate awakener in a world where Kim Sung-in was never born, where the apocalypse has not begun, and where his mother is alive and does not know his face. The streets are loud and bright and full of people, and every one of them is scheduled to die when Fafnir comes. Su-hyeun has seen that ending from the inside. This time he intends to be standing in its way.

What he carries back is not a cheat given by anyone. It is everything the old world beat into him: total memory of every skill, every boss, every catastrophe; magic refined to the ninth grade; and access to the Tower of Trials, a hundred floors of gates only he can open, where each floor is another world with its own rules, its own guardian, and its own way to kill the careless. While other awakeners scrape a living from low-grade dungeons, Su-hyeun climbs, harvesting rare skills, titles, and the Third Eye that shows him what others cannot perceive.

The climb gives him back more than power. A stubborn craftsman named Kim Dae-ho forges him armor weighted with magic resistance, the exact counter to the attack that once killed him. From a Divine Beast's Egg warmed on the corpses of hunted monsters hatches Miru, a newborn dragon that grows from a handful of scales into a sky-darkening Calamity. He drags future casualties out of their graves before they happen, breaks a guild that fattens on public fear, bargains with the Jade Emperor, trades blows with Sun Wukong and Prince Nezha, crosses blades with knights whose aura can split a hill, and stands on the stage of the Ranking Wars while the whole planet watches.

But the future does not wait politely. A Lich King learns to pour itself into living bodies. Gods fold him into their wagers and offer him godhood itself. Emperors try to buy him with honors, and something vast keeps wearing the shape of a black dragon in the skies of worlds he has not conquered yet. Countdowns he alone can read run out one by one, and the final one is labeled with the only name that has ever frightened him.

The Hero Returns is the story of a man who was used as a sword and comes back to be the hand that holds it. Every ally is someone he once failed to save. Every victory buys the world one more day before the sky turns black. He knows exactly how the apocalypse goes.

This time, he intends to overwrite the ending.
