Ledger of the Amber Route

FantasyComplete47 chapters

Ruun Visser inherited a bankrupt countinghouse in the port of Solmunde, and a Scale: the gift of seeing, before any contract is signed, the causal threads that run from the ink, who will default, who set the trap, which way the price will break. The gift has a cost. The threads are watched back, and every use of the Scale teaches the invisible watchers of the coast that the small firm is worth reading.

Armed with the Scale and three ledgers of his own making, the Contract Ledger for what the firm does, the Thread Ledger for what the firm knows, and the Watched Ledger for what the watching costs, Ruun survives a debt trap, a salt famine, a kill-contract, a berth blockade, and the murder of a crew sold in kind, and builds, from a mortgaged house and one salt writ, the most inconvenient firm on the Amber Route.

Then the coast's peace is offered to everyone at once. A new market rises, the Amber Grand Auction of Warrants and Sampled Lots, fair in every column, transparent in every price, and behind its smooth gray paper stands the same pen that drafted every trap the firm has ever escaped: Anselm, the Grand Accountant, a gentle man who has spent forty years buying the coast's freedom one catastrophe at a time, because he believes free markets are the greatest calamity of the world, and only a keeper who prices everything can prevent them.

Ruun enrolls. He sits at the keeper's own table, drinks the keeper's own tea, and casts the one bait no honest book can resist: a losing contract drafted to be taken over, built to force the room's pen to come home to the one lamp that knows its habits. And when the keeper's schedule finally prices a crew's lives as a cost of weather, Ruun keeps a promise made at the opening bell, in public, under a clause no one thought would ever trigger, and the keeping of the coast is forced, for the first time in its history, to carry a loss.

What follows is the first audit of a keeper: the fireproof records of an honest underwriter, the schedules of a rope master, the statutes of a weigh-house, a season of refused fees, a captain's word of route, and eight names read aloud from the keeper's own margin, where they had been entered as cost. The Amber Sale is turned inside out, the keep is taken from its maker, and the trade of the Amber Route is refounded as an open league, its books posted in every port, its keeper kept by his own schedules, and its amendment written into the founding law: no schedule shall ever price a life.

A completed tale of ledgers, ships, and the long arithmetic of trust, in which the war is fought with contracts, the enemy is an accountant who believes he is the cure, and the only instrument on the coast that cannot be drafted is a signature given in trust.
