The Outcast Alpha
by PageCrave Editorial
They burned the wolf out of his arm on the longest night of the year, in front of the whole pack, and called it justice.
Lorne, twenty-six, was born to an honest red rank and exiled for a forgery he never committed - accused of faking the very bloodline the elders burned off him at the Ash Ring, stripped with a heated iron while two hundred painted wolves watched. The charge was a lie with paperwork on it. The real crime belonged to the Alpha who signed the order: Voss of Ironpeak, a wolf born to the labor line who forged his way to the black seat twenty years ago and has ruled the north ever since on a rank that is paint over a lie.
Lorne knows because he heard the forgery happen. Three months before the Ash Ring, he stood in the dark of a corridor with a lamp under a study door and listened to a litany he has never forgotten: burn the page, keep the mark, the pack believes what the mark says. He said nothing then. The whisper Voss leans down to give him at the boundary stone - the same litany - tells Lorne the truth: they did not exile him because he lied. They exiled him because he listened.
But the stripping fire made a mistake. It burned his inherited rank down to bare tooth-root, and a bare root, the old fence stories say, can write. Out in the Seam - the border country where the packs dump their stains, their strays, and their priced wolves - Lorne's teeth wake to a gift the blood-rank law has no answer for. His bite re-inks a wolf's mark to its true worth. The stain-marked, the split-lined, the fence-born: one bite, and the mark tells the truth for the first time in its life.
The gift has a price. Every wolf he bites is bound to him in shared pain for life - every wound, every fever, every broken knuckle running both ways down the wire forever. The exiles keep coming anyway, because Lorne is the first thing in their frozen country that has ever said their marks are worth reading.
So the outcasts build. A mixed-blood scout who maps the unmappable. A split-marked giant a bounty patrol used for bait. An old clerk with the proof sewn into his coat. A hunt-second who refused to sign a lie. Wound by wound they become the Grey Bite Company, and the border wars that come for them only teach the Seam their name.
Thirty silver a head was the bounty. Then a seat at a black table. Then an army of two hundred, a burned tower, thirty kin chained in wagons - because Voss understands what is loose in his north: not a stray, but an audit. Every inherited rank in the land is now one honest bite from answering for itself - and the powerful fear being read.
It ends where it began: a trial on neutral ground, and the one law no court can hide behind - the Old Way, teeth against teeth, until one wolf yields or dies. Except the exile's teeth were never made for killing the guilty. They were made to make marks tell the truth - and the north is about to hear an Alpha's mark answer.
In our reading guide: The pack threw away the wrong wolf. Now the pack pays.
