The Vampire's Debt

WerewolfComplete30 chapters

Daniel Cross sold a century of his life for a fraction of vampire strength. A touched-human collector in the employ of House of Dawn, he takes blood debts out of human hides for a living: ten years of doorways, threats, and fear. The Touch makes him faster than any mortal and neither fully human nor fully vampire, a bridge with no shore on either side.

Then a routine collection hands him a dead man's key. Viktor Renko chose a bullet over the blood mines, and Locker 714 beneath the Under-Bank holds a ledger of Ash bribes paid into the leadership of House of Dawn. The first name in it belongs to Daniel's own supervisor.

His next assignment is Elena Vasquez, a pre-med student who borrowed sixty thousand in vampire gold to keep her sister alive, a woman whose impossible blood carries a mark out of the prophecy texts: the Bleeding Heart. Prophecy says her blood can crown the Long Night, a ritual offering three roads. Dominion, with vampires ruling openly over human chattel. Destruction, with every vampire burned to ash. Or Freedom, a hidden third road that breaks the thousand-year Compact and drags both species into the light. House of Ash wants the first path. House of Dawn would settle for the second. No one is supposed to know the third exists.

Hunted by both houses, Daniel and Elena run from safe houses to restricted archives to the catacombs beneath the Old Quarter, where Lord Valerius waits at a black-stone altar with Elena's sister bound in silver. There, with the runes drinking light and a silver dagger rising, the collector and his debtor choose: not Dominion, not Destruction, Freedom. The Compact shatters, and the sun rises on vampires for the first time in a thousand years.

Freedom, it turns out, is a debt too. The revealing nearly starts a war, and Valerius answers with hostages and a broadcast ultimatum. Daniel and Elena answer with the truth, told on live television until the world signs the New Compact and the long work begins: a mediation board, a university, an ancient tyrant talked out of a bomb with the promise of being remembered.

Then Daniel finds Article Nine: every old contract survived the treaty, grandfathered and collectible. Nine thousand touched humans are still bound, work villages operate in the quiet, and his own paper sits active in the Bonded Vault, preserved year after year by an anonymous payer. A young woman named Mara Reyes is dying of her contract while the vault farms her default. When the vault's renegade deputy rings the ancient summons plates and nine thousand debtors start walking, Daniel, instrument number seven, one of the nine thousand, walks into the dark with them, carrying the one clause the founders buried in their own charter.

And through all of it there is Elena: debtor, partner, wife. The want between them builds the way debts do, slowly and then all at once: a hand at her jaw, her breath at his throat, and every time it crests, the door closes and the light goes out, the morning finding them tangled and unashamed. Some debts are paid in full. The best ones are traded back and forth for a lifetime.

The last balance, when Daniel finally sets it down, is zero. Everything after the zero is a gift.
