I Am the White Moonlight

HistoricalComplete68 chapters

Sang YuanYi has read enough transmigration novels to know the rules, so when she wakes up inside one, she checks her odds first. They are terrible. She has landed in the body of the doomed "white moonlight" — the saintly first love of male lead Han Shaoling — on the very page where that character dies. The opening chapter does not say she stumbles or faints. It says, flatly: Sang YuanYi died.

Worse, she wakes minutes before the murder. You Yingyue, Han Shaoling's jealous consort and the villainess of the story's first arc, is already in the chamber with a silver jug of poisoned wine and an old servant refining it so no examiner will ever find a flaw. The guards are bought. The hero is elsewhere, comforting himself with Meng Wuyou, a newcomer who wears Sang YuanYi's face. No one is coming. If she wants to live, she will have to talk her way out — so she does the one thing no cannon-fodder heroine ever thinks of: she threatens the villainess with a bigger monster.

With what strength she has left, she names a man even You Yingyue fears to name. Her "brother." King You — You Wuming — the beautiful, black-hearted ruler whose own sister trembles at the thought of him, whose name is a taboo across the eighteen states of the cloud realm. One jade token later, the death sentence is cancelled, and the most dangerous man in the realm arrives to collect the woman who claims to admire him.

What follows is not the rescue anyone planned. You Wuming carries her off over the Black Iron Great Wall, through tides of underworld demons and the scheming of nine vassal states, ostensibly as a bargaining chip between You state and her father's Sang state — actually as a piece in his game against the Female Emperor's court in Tiandu, where something behind the throne has been poisoning him for years. Han Shaoling wants his white moonlight back. Meng Wuyou wants her face, her name, and her grave. And Sang YuanYi, who only wanted to dodge a scripted death, keeps improvising: out-talking assassins, learning cultivation from scratch, and quietly loosening the madness that has ruled You Wuming since he was a doll-pretty prince shut away in the boudoir.

She came armed with the plot. The plot keeps changing — because she is inside it now, and the villain whose menace holds the whole book together has started saving his softest moments for her. Then a palm-print poison puts three days on her own life, and the confession she once faked to stay breathing has to become real, or the man everyone fears will burn the realm down to follow her.

Along the way she collects what her character never had in the original: her cross-dressing brother Sang Bujin, the loyal old servant Aunt Ling, the urchin A Gu, and one very opinionated cloud beast.

Witty, dangerous, and unexpectedly tender, this is the story of a heroine who refuses her scripted death, a fake courtship that stops being fake, and the discovery that in this novel the true ending was never written — it has to be survived first.
