The Heart Untouched
by PageCrave Editorial
Two months after ACL surgery, Y/n L/n is still limping through senior year with a brace on her knee and a best friend who documents everything sideways. Then the emergency broadcast interrupts third period, armed men walk her school's walls, and her entire English class disappears into a government that officially does not exist.
The Foundation puts her in the wrong cell on purpose. SCP-049 is the Plague Doctor: five centuries old, bird-masked, gentle-voiced, and lethal to the touch, because every human he has ever held was thick with what he calls the pestilence. Every human but one. The girl with the bad knee registers as silence in a world of static — clean, untouched, the first still water he has met in five hundred years — and the monster whose hands stop hearts discovers he would rather use them to hold on.
Then the facility breaks open around them.
A lizard the size of a school bus hunts by smell. A laughing orange blob eats sadness on contact. And somewhere in the walls an old man with a broad hat and too many teeth rises through floors, smiling, patient, counting. He has watched the doctor for five centuries. Now he has smelled the girl, and what he wants, he has never once failed to collect. When SCP-049 leads twelve teenagers, one burned-out scientist, and a hoarded keycard across a battlefield of contained nightmares to Gate A, the escape succeeds at exactly the price the doctor knew he would pay: the highway is lit, the cameras are running, and a man with death in his gloves cannot walk beside the one clean thing in the world. He leaves her a white feather and a promise — I will find you — and keeps it, a year later, under a flickering campus lamp.
But the old man keeps count of his own. Elderly strangers are dying in their sleep along the doctor's walking route, smiling, alone, and every road he takes bends, mile by mile, toward the girl with the feather collection on her windowsill. The Foundation has a name for the thing that follows him: the Sexton. It has a photograph from 1666 of a plague doctor buried standing in a grave pit, and of the figure still holding the spade. It has a transcript that ends in four words — nobody has ever offered. And it has an undercover scientist with a laminated badge, a watch that will not tick, and one week of self-devouring paperwork to spend on the impossible: the ground where it all began, a first snow, and a surgery five centuries in the making that only the girl's untouched heart can make safe.
The Heart Untouched is a slow-burn paranormal romance about the most dangerous good man alive and the girl the rot could not enter — not because her heart was sealed, but because it was busy. He has five hundred years of cures to answer for. She has one last question on a laminated list. And the thing in the snow has finally stopped waiting.
