The Time Capsule Deal
by PageCrave Editorial
For one hundred years, a copper capsule has slept inside the cornerstone of Hartley College's oldest quad, waiting to be opened on the school's centennial. The plan was simple: dig it up, catalogue sixty-three items, throw a gala. Nobody planned on item sixty-four.
Blythe Merrill is the archive's star student, a senior who believes a collection is only as honest as its paperwork. Her spring assignment should have been a triumph: curating the centennial exhibit around whatever the capsule gives up. Instead, when the copper cylinder comes out of the ground on a February morning, the seal's date does not match the sealing manifest, and the sixty-fourth item is a letter no one scheduled, no one donated, and no one was supposed to find. It was written twenty-five years ago by a student whose graduation was taken from him, and it accuses the college of burying the theft. At the bottom sits a signature Blythe will spend the whole semester chasing: a man who now chairs the board.
Jonah Sackett is the architecture program's problem student, the one who took the blame for his younger brother and pays for it in four hundred hours of restitution labor. He is assigned to the exhibit as punishment. She is assigned to it as honor. Neither of them wants to share a workroom, a deadline, or a secret. So they make a deal, and it is a cold one: she keeps the paper, he keeps the walls, everything found in a wall comes to her first, and neither of them talks to the press.
The deal was supposed to be about survival. It turns out to be about evidence.
Because the deeper Blythe and Jonah dig into the capsule's paper trail, the clearer one fact becomes: the first box was sealed twice, and what walked in behind its schedule has been protecting someone ever since. A twenty-five-year-old design competition was decided by a vote of five to nothing and reversed by an office that never recorded the reversal. A student's career was signed over to another man's name. The firm that built half the campus has been curating its own legend for a quarter century, and the exhibit Blythe is building is scheduled to open in the same hall, under the same chandeliers, in front of the same family that owns the building's name.
Then the letter vanishes from a locked cage, a forged log entry puts Jonah at the scene, and the exhibit becomes a crime with a deadline. Every ally has an office and an agenda. Every document has a copy, a carbon, or a witness, if Blythe can find it before the gala. Her retrieval instincts are legendary and her costs are real: every query she logs narrows her access, and the house reads her logs.
A campus mystery with a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance, a heroine who fights with accession numbers, and a hero who knows why buildings stand up, The Time Capsule Deal is about the difference between a record and the truth, and about two people stubborn enough to make an institution say a true sentence out loud. The box will be opened. The question is what the class of 2076 inherits: a legend, or a receipt.
