Beneath the Polar Silence

RomanceComplete32 chapters

Seven years ago, a forged data sheet ended Nora Xia's career before it began. Her doctoral candidacy, her name, her future, all of it struck out by an inquiry she was never allowed to answer. The man she loved stood in a university corridor with snow coming through the doors and told her the wind outlasts everything. Then he let the wind take her.

Nora rebuilt herself the only way she knows: by counting. Now she is thirty-two, the safety officer of Meridian Station, nine hundred miles from the nearest anything, keeper of ropes, routines, and the one rule the Ice respects — count your own numbers first. She has a custody log, a fireproof box under her bunk, and no intention at all of thinking about 2020.

Then the staffing list comes north, and the chief scientist's name is Ethan Gu. Her ex. The man who weighed that forged sheet for three days instead of asking her one question. The man whose celebrated paper sits on her stolen baseline and calls itself independent validation.

One winter. One station. Ninety-nine days without a sunrise.

Nora plans for weather, not for war. But things begin happening at Meridian that weather does not explain: a generator that dies dirty, an archive wiped clean at 21:47 on Day 103, a melt-lens finding at sixty-one point five meters that the oversight delegation wants sealed before the world can read it. Professor Lyle Han arrives with his board smile and his filing cabinets, and Nora understands that the winter is a chessboard and someone has been building it for months.

To prove the lens is hers, she will have to do the one thing she swore off forever: trust Ethan Gu. Again.

He mirrors the station's logs and seals them under his own hand. He pins his objection to the duty board and signs his name to her side of the ledger. When she goes down a crevasse at kilometer eleven, fourteen meters into the blue dark with her femur singing, it is his voice on the rope and his hands on the haul, eleven kilometers against a doctor's orders and every term he ever kept.

Somewhere between the med bay curtain and the deadline on the galley wall, the arithmetic changes. The thermos he pours her at the start of winter is still hot. His explanations, seven years late, are longer than his alibis. And the distance between their bunks stays at regulation minimum — barely.

When the dark finally breaks, the program convenes an integrity hearing, and Nora Xia walks into it with four fieldbooks, one sealed drive, and a chain of custody signed by every soul who watched her count her own numbers first. Her name is on the docket at last, on the right side. Her evidence is on the table. The only question left is whether the man who once chose the wrong side of a corridor will stand where he stood seven years ago, or on her side of it, in front of the whole world, with dates.
