Indulgence
by PageCrave Editorial
It begins with a whisper at a rainy dock: meet me where no one can see us. Kangdong, a minister's son with a sharp tongue and a stubborn heart, has been meeting the young Emperor of Wu in secret for months. Then the whisper becomes a sack over his head, a trading ship, a slave market, and the discovery that the man who swore he loved him is the one who sold him.
Across the border, the Kim empire keeps its own secret shut away in a tower of silk. Prince Beomsoo, the heir, is the palace's beautiful ghost: rumored drunk, rumored cursed, blamed for the omegas who are sent to warm his chambers and never seen again. The truth is quieter and crueler. A fall from a horse left behind a mind that drifts, a wolf that surfaces in flashes of red rage, and a family that will hide him at any cost, because a broken heir is a dead heir.
The Luna picks Kangdong himself: scrubbed, schooled, hung with jewels, and sent in, a lamp carried into a dark room. The instructions are simple. Keep the prince calm, keep the secret, and stay clear of a court where the rival queen's faction is quietly clearing the road to a throne. Nothing about it is simple. Beomsoo begs for stories one night and shatters furniture the next; he clings, weeps, bites, adores. He feeds his pigeons in a walled garden and hides toys under the bed, and bit by bit, the slave who was bought to manage him becomes the person he cannot sleep without. The slave, for his part, catches himself counting the prince's smiles, then hating himself for it.
Then comes a marriage neither of them chose, a cup of milk left uncovered on purpose, a bath set alight, and letters from the man who sold him, each one begging Kangdong to betray the empire — and the boy — that saved him. To keep them both alive he will have to out-scheme a queen, hunt a drug through a palace where medicine is a weapon, and decide what a heart is worth once it has already been sold.
Indulgence is a slow-burn palace romance about the arithmetic of wanting: a prince who must grow into an emperor without losing the one soft thing he has, the sharp-tongued foreigner who teaches him, and the family they assemble out of grief, secrets and sheer stubbornness. Expect harem intrigue under silk, festivals that stain an entire city in color, wars fought with elephants and gunpowder, prophecies that come true sideways, two empress mothers feuding over cardamom, a spy who keeps switching sides, old friendships that outlast betrayals, and a love that grows the slow way — through fevers, tantrums and forgiveness — until the omega everyone pitied is the only person brave enough to stay.
For wanting is easy. Having is the bravest thing an emperor will ever do.
