My Sister's Boyfriend
by PageCrave Editorial
Ernest has loved Jesus since she was eight years old, since the summer a loud, bright boy walked into her living room and never really left. He is twenty-two now, half the east side answers to his word, and he is her best friend, her whole heart, and off limits — because her older sister, Trinity, saw him first and moved in first.
So Ernest keeps the peace. She takes his collect calls from jail, walks into his house for bail money, and catches Trinity in his bed with another man before the faucet in the kitchen has even dripped twice. She pays for his freedom, takes a stranger's slap for the truth, and gets called a jealous liar for telling it — because Trinity gets to the story first, the way she always has, and Jesus believes his girl over his best friend.
The lie grows teeth. By the time Ernest's pregnancy shows, Trinity has talked Jesus into denying the child at a baby shower in front of both families, and the man she keeps sneaking back to turns out to be worse than a cheat. Duck is a hustler with a grudge: his little brother died on the wrong porch in the shootout Jesus started over a setup, and Duck has been doing the math ever since. An eye for an eye. A brother for a brother.
Four days after Ernest gives birth to his son, Duck finds Jesus in the hospital parking lot and collects.
Which is when Ernest — twenty years old, four days postpartum, out of patience — decides the revenge math stops with her. She stands down Murda, her son's godfather, and the guns he has laid out in her kitchen. She sits the killer at her own table, hears the whole ugly story, and cuts a deal the streets have never seen: everybody holds their fire, and when the peace is real, Duck mails her one line — "It's cold."
It nearly costs her everything. Trinity is carrying Duck's baby under her own lie. The block is one rumor away from war. And the only way through is a confession so complete that her sister's whole life hangs on how Mama takes it at the family table.
Years later, the war is a story the children won't believe. Ernest married Isaiah Brooks, the Saturday-morning basketball coach who asked her son's permission before he asked for hers. Jesús Jr. has a little sister, two fistfuls of whistle, and his father's whole name in block letters. Duck's letters get read out loud at Trinity's kitchen table, her daughter taking questions from the floor. The fence between the sisters has a gate in it now, and nobody remembers who unlocked it.
My Sister's Boyfriend is a standalone contemporary romance about the girl who loved a street legend first, the sister who lied her out of his arms, and the stubborn woman who built peace out of the wreckage — for her son, for both families, and for the man who waited years for her to look up from the grave and notice he was already holding her life together.
