Stop That Hacker

RomanceComplete30 chapters

Last October, Samuel's biggest worry was mixing the right hangover cure for her brother Johnny. She is an artist, not a soldier: her weapons are hot cocoa, handmade gifts, and a memory that never forgets a face. Then her cat Momo goes missing, an anonymous message lands on her phone — is this your cat? — and she clicks the link with her whole desperate heart. That one careless click opens a door into her family's life that nobody knows is there.

The trail leads to the devil's den, the most feared corner of the student world, where gamers, geniuses and underground hackers gather under a boy in a hood they call Lily. Lily is the devil, the rumors say. The last guy who crossed him moved to another country. He also carries lost cats home in his arms and quietly pays for a scared girl's hot cocoa — because the devil of the den turns out to be Max, the same sleepy stranger Samuel swore she would never see again. Sworn enemies to... something else. Her brother's business partner. Her family's newest problem. The boy her mother figured out first, from a trail of hoodie-scented laundry, long before Samuel worked up the nerve to say his name out loud.

Because loving a person who lives half his life inside computers means learning to be afraid in new shapes. Max has enemies. One of them has spent two years rehearsing a speech in an empty cafe corner, and on Christmas Eve he strikes: the den's alarms scream, Max cuts every line and vanishes, and Samuel spends the holiday passing cookies to guests while her whole world quietly falls down a well. When the truth surfaces, it points straight back to October — to her, to Momo, to one link she should never have touched. The enemy is already inside. He is patient. And he has picked New Year's Eve to watch everything Max built burn to the ground.

So the family does what this family does best. They convene the Family Court, appoint a judge nobody can bully, and go to war with snacks, binoculars, one rainbow laser and a fake vault that glows fat and beautiful on a dark screen. Somewhere between the fireworks and the police van, a girl with paint on her fingers decides that hiding behind the people she loves is over. This time she is done being the bait in someone else's trap.

SOMEBODY STOP THAT HACKER!

This year, Samuel screams it herself — at the top of her lungs, in the middle of a crowd that thinks it is street theater, standing right next to the boy she loves. Somebody has to stop that hacker. Preferably her, with snacks, before midnight.

And when the smoke clears, the Family Court delivers its verdict: the defendant is sentenced to be her boyfriend, openly, at every family function, starting with the terrible Ferris wheel at the winter festival. He never stood a chance. Neither did she.
