The Nanny He Never Forgot
by PageCrave Editorial
Quarterback Tyrann Moore posted the nanny ad with one hand at dawn, while his one-year-old son tried to eat the laptop keyboard. He needed help before the season swallowed them both. What he got instead was a knock at the door that stopped his heart.
The woman on his step is Novalee Flores: nineteen, broke, applying for a nanny job because the dog walking dried up. She has never seen this house. She has never met the two men staring at her like she is somebody come back from the dead, and she does not understand why the tall one says her name once and then cannot speak.
A year ago, Tyrann's pregnant girlfriend vanished from his life in a single phone call. Her mother told him Novalee had not survived the birth, that there would be no funeral, that the baby needed a father and not a grave to visit. Tyrann raised little Tyrese on that lie. He screamed into his hands and spent a year learning to be both parents alone, studying old photographs so he would not forget her face.
Now she is standing in his doorway, alive, holding a dog leash she brought in case the job involved a dog, and she remembers none of it. Not the nickname he gave her. Not the sonogram. Not the pinky promise to call every day. Not the baby.
Her mother calls the pills in Novalee's purse headache medicine. She calls the scars a mugging. And every night Novalee swallows what she is given and loses another piece of a life she cannot remember living.
Tyrann hires her on the spot. It is the only move he has: bring her home, put their son in her arms, and wait for the woman he loves to surface from inside the stranger. He knows the risk. His cousin Antonio remembers everything, and he is done waiting politely. Memory is a stubborn thing, but it may come back for everything except him.
Then a first date at a pizza parlor where the owner has kept her old table reserved for a year. A drive-in movie, a bottle of water, a pill bottle, a label that names a drug built to erase people. One confrontation on her mother's floor later, Novalee is holding on to a truth nobody was allowed to tell her: she has a son, she has a past, and the man she thought was a stranger has been loving her through a locked door for a year.
The Nanny He Never Forgot is a second-chance romance about a father who never stopped setting a place at his table, and the nanny who walked back into her own life one memory at a time. It ends where love ends up: a wedding, a learning center with six little chairs, a vow renewal under a balloon from the same company that once carried them over Paris, and a four-year-old who still asks for the nanny story at bedtime. Nothing ever really changed. She stayed. That was the whole miracle.
